One of the questions I ask my clients is, how frequently they exfoliate their skin. Answers vary, such as: what’s that? Rarely! Everyday! Once a week! etc.! Most often their answers bring an expression of wonder upon their face, like, do I really need to do that? This is when I explain the importance of exfoliating our skin.
Every night while we sleep the skin starts a process of intense repair and cellular regeneration. This process leaves the skin with lipids (oil) and dead cells that our regular cleansing facial does not remove completely.
· Why Exfoliate?
Exfoliating will remove hard dead skin cells which, in turn, helps prevent the appearance of imperfections and improves the skins micro-circulation. This will allow your products to work more effectively. It doesn’t remove wrinkles but prevent early ageing, and that’s why I recommend beginning an exfoliation routine while we are young.
· How often do I need to exfoliate my skin?
The answer is regularly, but not every day. I know there are many products and brands that recommend “everyday” but NO! Exfoliating every day will remove the skin barrier. I recommend once a week for Normal/dry/Combination Skin and twice a week for Oily Skin. If your Skin is delicate or sensitive, exfoliate every 7-10 days with a delicate scrub.
· Important benefits:
- A deep cleanse that not just eliminates dead cells it also removes black heads.
- Improves skin micro-circulation, through the circular massage action of exfoliating.
- Preparing the skin to accept the next product to work effectively.
· The right way to do it:
I recommend in the evening because that is the time of the cellular regeneration.
Apply the scrub on semi-wet skin, start from the nose and massage in a circular motion up the forehead, cheeks, and chin. Avoid exfoliating the eye and lip contour (they need specific products) rinse with warm water and apply a cold cloth to close the pores.
Once you apply the scrub don’t massage the same zone for more than 30 seconds to avoid irritation or removing the skin barrier.
